Home Building Tips

Now that we've covered the benefits of the team approach to home building, as well as how to assemble your design/build team, another crucial element to an enjoyable experience is clearly defining your expectations for the endeavor. The more clearly you have thought about what you want in your home, the more accurately and creatively the designer can conceptualize the perfect creative solution. You probably already have a good idea of how many bedrooms and baths, one-story or two-story, the size of your garage, and if you need a home office, game room, etc. If not, take some time to think these through and then consider these additional points as well:

What style(s) do you want your home to represent? What do you have in mind for the exterior finish and the interior flow and feel? Which types of rooms or living areas need to be incorporated? What type of storage do you desire? What details do you foresee for the main living area, kitchen, master suite and master bath? Are there other buildings, details or aspects of your lifestyle to be considered?

Pippin's Projects
This month, we take you to the home of Joe Nemechek, Sr. and his wife, Martha. A race family through and through, the family had definite ideas in mind for the design of their home, including the unique request for the look of a New England barn style.

Country living in an upscale setting characterizes this unique home inspired by the homeowners' childhood memories and a love of natural woods. Attention to detail permeates the waterfront residence with a variety of woods in varying designs and patterns throughout.

Award Winning Design

As part of the final evening of the 2003 AIBD Convention in Seattle, Washington, awards were presented to some of the country's best residential designers. Among those honored with a prestigous award in the 2003 AIBD & Garlinghouse Design Competition was Jennifer Pippin, owner of Pippin Home Designs, who was proud to take home a First Place design award.

The award-winning design for the residence of Dr. Ed and Mrs. Marianne Campbell in Lake Norman, NC is a custom Craftsman style home, with an updated color palette and rich details throughout. Keeping in mind the family's desire for a modest and practical home, emphasis was placed on quality of space, instead of mere quantity.

From Jenny's Design Board

After purchasing a plan from another designer's plan book, Randy & Kim Jordan realized that various adjustments needed to be made to more thoroughly accomodate their needs. A total of 600 square feet was added to the plan, including a fourth bedroom and bathroom and a home office with bathroom. In addition, the basement was eliminated, moving the garage to the main level and expanding it to accomodate three vehicles. Other changes were made to make the plan more efficient and aesthetic, including an outdoor living area with summer kitchen, fireplace and hot tub.

While plan books can often accomodate a family's needs, it may be difficult to find exactly what you need in a home that is already designed. With that in mind, Pippin Home Designs offers plan modification services for homeowners who have purchased a plan from their plan book, or from another source.
