Home Building Tips: Wallpaper Installation

I'd like to wallpaper my dining room. Do I need to prime the walls prior to installing wallpaper? If so, why and what product should I use?

The single most important thing you should do before hanging wallpaper is to prime the walls with a wallpaper primer. Make sure the product being applied is specifically designed for wallpaper. There are several reasons for this, as the product protects the sheetrock, improves adhesion, seals the surface and allows removal in the future without damaging the wall. In addition, since manufacturers recommend priming, following this recommendation insures your warranty. Remember that one of the major causes of installation problems is poor wall preparation.

Pippin's Projects: Southern Charm meets Family Convenience
With a growing family, busy schedule and a long commute to work, convenience was paramount in the design of the Mitchell family's home. Robert and Margaret were attracted to the charming details of homes lining the streets of Charleston, but needed to incorporate that look into a floor plan that would make the most of their time together and make everyday activities less time-consuming.

One of the family's favorite spots of their new home is this gorgeous outdoor fireplace. The living area is extended to the outdoors by a quiet covered porch and secluded surroundings.

Designing Your Home: How Do I Begin a Renovation Project?

Many homeowners planning to renovate are unsure about how to get started. When it comes to discussing your project, is it better to meet your design professional at the site, or in another location? What should you expect during that meeting? And what can be done in preparation of the discussion?

First, you should remember that a successful renovation design includes an evaluation of the intricacies of your existing construction. For that reason, a site visit is ALWAYS reccomended as a first step to a renovation endeavor.

You can expect to pay a reasonable fee for this consultation and the time and travel involved. So, to make the most of the time with your design professional, it is best to have all of the information on your lot, the existing construction (including original blueprints if available), your ideas (pictures and magazine clippings), and even your "wish list" for what you hope to accomplish in the renovation.

While there are normally no drawings provided at this initial site visit, it is an invaluable tool in the development of your plans and should not be underestimated. After a thorough disucssion of the project and a visit to your property, a clearer picture of how to proceeed is sure to emerge.

Pippin Home Designs, Inc. can assist with your renovation site visit or other design service. Click here to learn about all of the services available. »

The Healing Home: What is Feng-Shui?

This is the first of ongoing articles on the magic world of Feng Shui. I will be enlightening readers about the power and beauty of this ancient Chinese art of placement and balance.

Feng Shui (pronounced "fung schway", meaning literally "wind and water") originated in China several thousands of years ago, when people realized the benefits of living on land and in homes that had good energy, or "chi". Chi is the energetic force that is all around and within us; it is the motivating force that moves us in the world. When chi is flowing smoothly and evenly around and through us, we experience health, happiness and productivity, but when chi is disrupted or stagnant we feel out of balance physically, mentally and emotionally. Feng shui is the art of bringing chi into optimal balance in our environment, so we can live and move through our spaces with ease.

In upcoming articles I will be describing more about feng shui and its use as a powerful tool to work with chi in your spaces. You will learn that "going with the flow" is not an idle phrase, but a much larger aspect of your ability to "live large" on the planet!
