Home Building Tips: Making the Most of Your Home Office Space

The first and most obvious consideration is the location of the home office. Will you be devoting an entire room such as a study, or just a part of a multi-purpose room? Your building designer or architect can assist you in making this determination, and work with a custom furniture company to optimize that space.

For example, corners make very practical areas for custom home offices, and you can even incorporate decorative corner wall cabinets above the workstation. A professional designer will ask all of the important questions regarding computer components, the style of cabinetry, materials such as laminates or fine hardwoods, and any accessories such as keyboard trays, pencil drawers, etc.

By seeking the advice of qualified professionals throughout the design of your new office, you can be sure that your office provides optimum functionality and is aesthetically pleasing.

Dear Jessica,

This month's newsletter has something for everyone- from tips on developing a home office to an inside peek at a cozy lakefront cottage. Also, don't miss details on the recent Lake Norman design competition and more information from our Feng-Shui expert consultant.

- Jennifer B. Pippin, CPBD; Owner, Pippin Home Designs, Inc.

Pippin's Projects: Cozy Living at the Lake
In a peaceful cove off of Lake Norman, the Economos family prepared to build a new home for the next stage in their life. With their children grown and ready to leave home, they sought the help of Pippin Home Designs, Inc. to create a comfortable floor plan that would facilitate the childrens' weekend visits, while meeting their needs for a full-time residence.

With busy careers and limited down time, elements like the functional great room and kitchen were key. With Pippin's help, they also designed the walk-out basement to incorporate open space for a pool table, as well as a second living area and two guest rooms.

A stone exterior creates the appeal of a small cottage, while quality interior details and finishing create the ambience common to much larger homes.

Pippin Named Among the "Best of the Lake"

The first annual design competition held by the Lake Norman Home Builders Association in Mooresville, NC was a true success- honoring the most distinguished new homes and renovations in the area and recognizing homes in a special "Curb Appeal" category.

Pippin Home Designs, Inc. was among the winners recognized at the Awards Dinner held on Thursday, November 11, as owner Jennifer B. Pippin accepted a 2nd Place Award for her renovation of an historic property built in 1895, transformed to become her company's modern Cornelius offices.

The Healing Home: "Feng-Shui" Your Home's Exterior

If your front entrance is less than welcoming, there are several things you can do to make it more so. One way is to add color. In feng shui, the color you bring into this area of your home depends on where the door is located, so I can't be specific in telling you exactly which color is best, without actually being there. But in general, adding a bright, warm color brings in a more vibrant energy and using soft, cooler colors such as blues and indigos bring in deeper aspects.

Another way to add interest is with a wreath on the door or plantings or plants in pots around the entrance. Anything in nature is good feng shui - just be sure to keep live plants healthy! If real plants aren't your thing, authentic looking silk plants will do just as well. Putting a ceramic nature animal is an excellent idea as well. Animals carry different energies; thinking of a turtle gives you a different feeling than a wolf, right? Add nature touches to bring about the feeling you want to have when you look at them.

Color is a very important component of feng shui, and different areas of your home should include the colors that honor particular aspects of those spaces. I'll talk more about this next month.
