Home Building Tips: Track Your Construction Progress
Building your home is a rewarding experience, but can be confusing if you are not sure of what to expect. Keep this checklist handy to gauge your progress every step of the way.
1) Survey of lot 2) Permitting, zoning, health & building 3) Demolition, grading & excavation 4) Footings, foundation & slabs [inspections for all] 5) Framing of floor system, walls, roof & dry-in 6) Waterproofing, inspection, backfill & final grading 7) Roofing, windows & doors 8) Mechanical rough-in & inspection for each [plumbing, HVAC, electrical, TV & communication) 9) Installation of underground utilities with inspections 10) Exterior veneer & finishes 11) Interior wallboard & hard surface flooring [wood, ceramic or stone tiles] 12) Installation of cabinets, built-ins & stairs 13) Interior trim & carpentry & millwork 14) Interior painting & finishes [including hardwood floor finishes] 15) Landscaping underway 16) Mechanical finish [electrical & plumbing fixtures, HVAC supply & return trims], 17) Remaining floor covering [carpets & vinyl] 18) Final inspections & certificate of occupancy 19) Installation of electrical meter 20) Start up & testing of mechanical systems by respective trades 21) Maintenance/systems review 22) HOUSEWARMING!

Autumn has arrived and Pippin Home Designs is staying busy with both new home and renovation designs. Check out the "Pippin's Projects" section for views of a unique prairie style home, and "Jenny's Design Board" for details on a renovation project currently in the works. In addition, we are participating in the Southern Ideal Home Show later this month where we will be available to discuss homeowner's ideas for their custom home plans. Pippin's Projects: A Prairie Home on the Lake
 This sprawling fifteen-room, four and-a-half bath home was designed and placed on the lot so that all interior areas would allow homeowners and visitors to enjoy the view of the lake from every angle. The home won local, regional, and national design awards for its esthetically pleasing angles and earthen beauty.
Designer Jennifer Pippin also designed custom built-in cabinetry including dining china cabinets, kitchen cabinetry with rounded free-standing shelves, and built- in entertainment center in the formal living room.

From Jenny's Design Board
 With the demand for home remodel and addition projects becoming increasingly popular, renovation designs now account for approximately one half of our clients, including the home featured this month "From Jenny's Design Board".
When we were first contacted by the Mooresville family, they emphasized how much their 1974 home needed to be updated and an addition incorporated to more adequately meet their needs. Even their children, now grown and living elsewhere, were insistent about the need to do something to their home. "Our kids told us that if we didn't remodel the house before our next anniversary then they would have our party at the bowling alley," jokes the homeowner.
Although the renovation design is still in the works, Jenny has been able to help the homeowners add some 2000 square feet to their home, including a two car basement garage. Another 1022 square feet of the existing home are in the plans to be remodeled, thereby creating a more modern, functional home for the couple.

Don't miss "Today's Custom Home" Fall issue, which features a great lake side renovation design by Pippin Home Designs, which transformed a small vacation cottage into one couple's modern, full-time residence. Jenny was also contacted this month for a product review which appeared in "Custom Home" and "Remodeling"magazine.
