Sustainable design is now considered obsolete by many in the industry. Trying to prevent further damage to the environment through sustainable design is like applying a band-aid to a bullet wound. A more forward-thinking approach is necessary. Regenerative home design holds the key to our future by reversing ecological damage, repairing what has been lost, and contributing to a positive impact on the environment and our health.

Our Sick Home blog series has been packed with TONS of useful tips, tricks, and insider information for designing a healthy home. To wrap up the series, here’s a distilled summary with helpful direct links to the most valuable resources for building materials, contractors, and products that have supported our clients over the years. This week we’re shining a bright light on the darker side of the home design and building industry. The story we share here might be hard to believe. Trying to communicate potential dangers to our clients when it comes time to make decisions about which contractors to hire can be like pulling teeth because the issues discussed here are legally kept hidden with non-disclosure agreements. Homeowners don’t know what homeowners don’t know! And sometimes, what you don’t know can hurt you…physically and financially. This week, in the fifth post of the Sick Home Series, we’ve teamed up with Christine and Mike Macke who are ready to share their story. They’re determined to educate others so the nightmare they had to live through is never experienced by another unsuspecting homeowner. Shouldn’t the air inside your home be clean? Shouldn’t it be healthy? According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 30% of new and remodeled buildings across the globe are causing illnesses attributed with poor indoor air quality. The inside of your home is a controlled environment. Are you in control? Since the industrial revolution, chemical compounds have become pervasive in the home building industry, used in everything from foam insulation, to flooring, to cabinets, and carpeting. Homeowners have had very little choice of the materials being used to build their homes and so have unwittingly agreed to the use of dangerous toxins in their indoor environment. |
